Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs must be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
