Our Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Position.

At first glance, this work may look more like a difficult academic examination than the latest popular music album from an artist who just had a previous hit featured an international K-pop icon. Divided across 4 distinct movements and performed in thirteen languages, this is a breathtaking symphonic work exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, often through the perspective of different saintly figures. The end of a love affair—a topic handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—soars upwards here, buoyed by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer within a long list of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the efforts of other artists seem rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to escape overly academic chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with complete credit going to the artist. While it's not her first project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, the ambitions feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent drama, is an essential spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic Björk at her peak, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's singing which sweeps you up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, you still desire to stay alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning Italian song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops away, and we hear a spontaneous giggle and a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like comedic force. The song then shifts to the frenetic single driven by racing strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly every song concludes in a totally different place than where it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a cut echoing the artist's earlier rhythmic work starts out moody and sinister, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to soften its rough corners.

The Balance Between Experiment and Pop

A key balancing act on Lux involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no coincidence that the album has become the artist's first work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language swells around a refrain that seems to gather increasingly infectious hooks as it spirals upward. That trick gets echoed on another powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural impact of contemporary heartbreak songs, eviscerating a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing have a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to completely explore but doesn't seem like a chore. While some big pop albums of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the characters around it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
