In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
