Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
